Our Family vacation at Glacier National Park

Travel

Back in May when I booked a wedding at Flathead lake I asked my husband if we would be interested in doing a little mini vacation to Glacier National Park. Since it was on both of our list of places we wanted to see. We really only had one day at the park which wasn’t ideal but since we were driving from Tacoma and had a 15 month old in the car we had to work with what we had. Also with this little mini vacation I decide to take a little break from social media & my camera. The only time I picked up my camera was when we went into the park. I really enjoyed this break from social media I just literally turned off my phone and it was wonderful not to be pulled that direction and I could enjoy my time with my family which was needing during this very busy time during the wedding season.

When the day finally came for us to head to Glacier National Park we were sad to find out that most of the main attractions were closed for the season. Apparently the park’s attractions close down at the end of September and since we got there at the beginning of October we just missed all the fun stuff. But that was OK since we weren’t going to have time for that stuff and really could only got one 1 or 2 hikes. Since we aren’t hikers we needed something easy and especially since myself and Pat were going to be carrying Mia in the carrier, distant + steep trails weren’t going to be our cup of tea. So when we arrived in the park I asked the ranger which was the prettiest and easiest hike. She told me that a great one was to Hidden Lake and it was only about 1.5 miles long. OK so I have to say this Autumn is my favorite time of year and Glacier National park was in full autumn colors and it was beyond beautiful!  So I wanted to challenge myself photography wise so I only brought one lens with me my 24mm prime lens for our day in the park. It’s a lens I never use but felt it was a good way to get out of my comfort zone.

As we headed into the park we started our 25 mph climb into the park and let me tell you 25 mph was plenty fast enough going up those steep roads with only but a 3 foot stone guard rail keeping you from going off a huge cliff. As we got higher the beauty got more majestic and also the lack of trees. Being that most of our highest areas I have climb too or visited have been around the 3000 ft in elevation but before you even get into the park you are already at 3000 ft elevation this whole lack of trees was both amazing and beautiful. When we got to where the Hidden Lake trail we were so excited to get out of the car and stretch our legs. The trail is half on normal trail and half raised walkway to protect the natural plants that are in Glacier. At the halfway point we kept seeing taking pictures and looking at something on the rocks, well sure enough there was a Big Horn Sheep lying on a ledge up from the trail. Because I had only a wide angle lens on I could only get photos where he was pretty tiny in the frame. After we got to the lake we had some sandwiches and enjoyed the beauty around us then headed back towards the car. On the way back Pat had Mia in the carrier and she fell asleep which was pretty entertaining. She fell asleep with her head back and arm out so everyone we passed was getting a kick of our sleeping position. I did fix her position but I did want to document it because it was pretty funny.

Oh Jenny. Wow. It’s gorgeous out there huh? And your images capture so perfectly the rugged beauty. There’s something in your images that reminds me of Ansel Adams’ work, in the black and whites images especially. Such raw beauty. And it looks like y’all pretty much had the place to yourselves, which I bet was uh-maaaaaaaazing.
